WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) has emphasized the importance of refocusing U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America with the introduction of the Americas Act. In an op-ed for the Ripon Forum, Cassidy highlighted the need for a self-sufficient Western Hemisphere dedicated to economic prosperity, democracy, and the rule of law.

"Our legislation makes the U.S. competitive again by creating the only viable alternative to a Latin American ensnared by the CCP—a self-sufficient Western Hemisphere that is dedicated to economic prosperity, democracy, and the rule of law," wrote Dr. Cassidy.

The Americas Act, co-introduced with Senator Michael Bennet and other bipartisan lawmakers, aims to strengthen ties across the Western Hemisphere and counter China's increasing influence in the region. Cassidy outlined the pillars of the proposal, including addressing corruption, expanding U.S. loan authority, enhancing trade opportunities, and investing in people-to-people partnerships.

Cassidy emphasized, "The Americas Act’s vision for our hemisphere is in stark contrast to the CCP’s ambitions because it is rooted in the advancement of liberty and the expansion of democracy. People are most free when they decide who leads them. And for democracy to flourish, there must be liberty and prosperity. The Americas Act promotes all three."

The legislation seeks to offer a strategic alternative to China's growing presence in Latin America and promote economic stability through enhanced trade relationships within the Western Hemisphere. By creating a self-sufficient and prosperous region, the Americas Act aims to counter China's influence and strengthen democratic values in the hemisphere.

With bipartisan support and endorsements from key lawmakers like Mike Gallagher, the Americas Act represents a concerted effort to reprioritize Latin America and provide a viable solution to the challenges posed by China's expansion. Cassidy's advocacy for a renewed focus on the Western Hemisphere underscores the importance of building lasting partnerships and countering unchecked Chinese growth in the region.
