U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D., Chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, and Tommy Tuberville released a draft bill on Mar. 18 aimed at eliminating fraud in federal child care funding. The proposal follows investigations into several states for failing to prevent misuse of these funds.

The issue is significant because fraud in child care programs diverts resources away from children and working families who need them most. The senators are seeking feedback from stakeholders on their discussion draft by April 8.

“Every dollar stolen is a dollar not going to children and working families,” said Dr. Cassidy. “While Minnesota brought attention to the issue, this is not just a Minnesota problem. Any criminal who steals from children and rips off taxpayers will be held accountable.”

Senator Tuberville said, “American families have been robbed for far too long. We need to find the source of this abuse and cut it off so that our children and families can truly thrive. I will always work to hold the bad actors in the system accountable and advocate for Alabama’s hardworking families and their children.”

The senators’ proposal includes strengthening eligibility verification for child care funding, increasing federal audits in high-fraud states such as Minnesota, Oregon, and New York, ensuring transparency in spending, establishing penalties for non-compliance by states, providing more information to taxpayers about how funds are used, and making sure single parents who marry do not lose access to funding.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee works on legislation related to public health, education policy, workforce issues, retirement programs, federal regulations affecting health and education nationwide, as well as oversight of agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to the official website. In the current Congress, Cassidy serves as chair of this committee.

As Congress considers updates to laws like the Child Care and Development Block Grant Act—which has not been reauthorized since 2014—the committee’s actions could shape future protections for American families.
