U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy announced on Apr. 22 that Senator Jim Banks will become chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee’s Subcommittee on Employment & Workplace Safety following Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s departure to lead the Department of Homeland Security. Cassidy also welcomed Senator Alan Armstrong to the committee.
The appointments are significant because the HELP Committee plays a central role in shaping federal policy on public health, education, workforce issues, and retirement programs. The committee aims to protect health and support worker rights, according to the official website.
“Senators Banks and Armstrong are longtime conservatives who will do good work in their new roles,” said Dr. Cassidy. “I’m looking forward to working with them to continue advancing a pro-family, pro-patient, pro-worker agenda.”
Banks said he is grateful for the opportunity: “I’m grateful for this opportunity to help more workers get the training they need and support American manufacturing. Rebuilding our industry starts with supporting the people who keep this country running and making sure working Americans can get ahead.”
Armstrong commented on his appointment by saying: “I’m honored to join the Senate HELP Committee. Expanding opportunity, supporting jobs skills development, and ensuring healthier communities are foundational to a strong economy. I’m ready to get to work.”
The HELP Committee influences federal regulations affecting health and education across the United States according to its official website. It provides oversight of federal laws and agencies in health and labor sectors according to its official website, including oversight of agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) according to its official website.
In the current Congress, Cassidy serves as chair of this key committee according to its official website.
