U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) has expressed support for President Trump’s consideration of deploying the National Guard to New Orleans. The statement comes after President Trump indicated he is weighing the option as a response to ongoing concerns in the city.
Cassidy pointed to previous deployments in Washington, D.C., as evidence that increased uniformed presence can enhance public safety. “The National Guard in Washington, D.C. demonstrated that more uniforms on the street, whatever the color of the uniform is, makes our community safer. It is not a long-term solution, but this gives us a chance to demonstrate that it is just as true in Louisiana as it is in Washington, D.C.,” said Dr. Cassidy.
No timeline or specific details have been provided regarding when or if the National Guard will be sent to New Orleans.
