U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) spoke on the Senate floor, criticizing Senate Democrats for blocking all of President Trump’s nominees from being confirmed by unanimous consent or voice vote. Cassidy said this action disrupts the traditional process used to confirm presidential nominees.
“Democrats are obsessed with finding every way possible to undermine the President and his agenda, no matter the cost,” said Dr. Cassidy.
He added, “Americans are sick of it. They want Congress to work. And Republicans are showing up to work.”
Cassidy noted that in previous administrations, most nominees were confirmed through these expedited processes. He referenced past presidents—Clinton, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Biden—as having had the majority of their nominees confirmed without extensive debate or delay.
Cassidy stated that eight months into President Trump’s second term, not a single nominee has been confirmed by unanimous consent or voice vote despite bipartisan committee support for some candidates.
He argued that this is an example of partisanship affecting government operations: “This is a full-blown example of Democrats not caring if the business of government doesn’t get done.”
Cassidy concluded his remarks by emphasizing that Americans want Congress to function effectively and accused Democrats of holding up nominations due to opposition toward President Trump: “But Democrats are holding these nominees for ransom for no other reason except their hatred for Donald Trump.”
He finished by saying that Republicans are prepared to confirm key officials needed for government operations and called on Congress to move forward.
