U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy visited Tangipahoa Parish on Wednesday to discuss the potential impacts of President Donald Trump’s One, Big, Beautiful Bill. Speaking at the Tangipahoa Chamber of Commerce, Cassidy outlined how the proposed legislation aims to support small businesses and workers in the region.
“The One, Big, Beautiful Bill was written with businesses and workers in mind,” said Dr. Cassidy. “We’re making it easier for Tangipahoa’s job creators to do what they do best, while letting workers keep more of what they earn.”
The bill would make permanent certain tax relief measures from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, including lower rates and deductions for capital expenses. It also proposes eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay for most workers and removing Social Security tax obligations for most senior citizens.
Cassidy highlighted additional federal investments in Tangipahoa Parish through his work on the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and appropriations process. In May, he announced that Hammond will receive $84,000 from the IIJA to rehabilitate parts of the Hammond Northshore Regional Airport. He has also included $5 million in a Senate appropriations bill to fund a roundabout project at Airport Road and Highway 3158.
Melissa Bordelon, President and CEO of the Tangipahoa Chamber, introduced Cassidy at the event.
“Tangipahoa Chamber business leaders appreciated the chance to hear directly from U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy as he shared updates and perspectives on issues impacting our parish, our state, and our nation,” said Ms. Bordelon. “Hearing directly from policymakers helps our members stay informed about federal issues that influence the business environment here at home.”
Later in the day, Cassidy toured C&W Wholesale’s new facility in Hammond. The company supplies food products to restaurants, schools, and cafeterias across Louisiana and Mississippi.
“S&W Foods turned an idea into a legacy,” said Dr. Cassidy. “That’s why President Trump and I are working together to give Louisianans the tools they need to continue building the success of their businesses.”
The bill includes a provision allowing certain small businesses to deduct 20% of qualified business income from their tax returns—a measure that benefits companies like C&W Wholesale by easing growth and hiring.
C&W Wholesale employs 125 full-time staff members and has expanded its operations after moving into a larger facility last November. CEO Paul Spalitta led Cassidy through a tour during which industry challenges were discussed.
“Louisiana’s restaurants and hospitality businesses are the backbone of our communities, and they rely on a strong, reliable supply chain to succeed,” said Mr. Spalitta. “We appreciate Senator Cassidy taking the time to tour S&W’s new Hammond headquarters and hear directly from us about the challenges our industry is facing. His support helps ensure independent operators across Louisiana can continue serving the meals and experiences that bring people together.”
