U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) addressed the U.S. Senate to honor two law enforcement officers from Louisiana who were shot in the line of duty on October 6 in Plaquemine, Louisiana. Captain Brett Stassi Jr., son of Sheriff Stassi, and Deputy Charles Riley of the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office were both injured during an attempt to arrest a suspect linked to a sexual assault case at a courthouse building.
Deputy Riley, described as a six-year veteran, husband, and father, died from his injuries after being taken to the hospital. Captain Stassi remains in critical but stable condition following multiple surgeries.
“Mr. President, a tragedy like this reminds us that law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for us every single day,” said Dr. Cassidy.
He continued, “Deputy Riley gave his life protecting our community. We pray for his close friends and loved ones—those here who grieve the loss of someone they look up to and will deeply miss.”
Cassidy also expressed hope for Captain Stassi’s recovery: “We pray and hope for Stassi’s strength and full recovery—and for his wife and family.”
The senator emphasized the risks law enforcement officers face and called for ongoing support for them and those affected by such incidents. “The support we get from law enforcement—the willingness to put themselves in harm’s way—can never be repaid,” he said.
Cassidy concluded by urging continued backing for law enforcement and support for those suffering after this event.
