U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) has joined as a co-sponsor of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a bill introduced by Senator Mike Lee (R-UT). The legislation aims to require proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections.
“If you’re not an American citizen, you don’t vote in American elections. The SAVE Act makes sure of it,” said Dr. Cassidy.
The proposed act would amend the National Voter Registration Act to mandate that states verify U.S. citizenship during voter registration. It specifies which documents can be used to prove citizenship and directs states to establish alternative methods for verification if standard documents are unavailable. The bill also requires states to remove non-citizens from their voter rolls and sets federal penalties for anyone who intentionally registers non-citizens.
