U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) called on the Senate to pass the SAVE America Act in a floor speech delivered on March 21, as Democrats continue to block the legislation. The bill would require proof of citizenship for voting in federal elections.

The debate over the SAVE America Act is significant because it addresses concerns about election integrity and voter eligibility. Supporters argue that verifying citizenship is a necessary step to ensure only eligible Americans participate in federal elections.

“To my Democratic colleagues, I ask you to listen to the people. Pass the SAVE America Act,” Cassidy said during his remarks. He added that “the SAVE America Act is supported by 71 percent of Democrats and 95 percent of Republicans.” Cassidy also stated, “It does not prevent any eligible American citizen from casting a ballot. It does not take away anyone’s constitutional rights. It just says that only American citizens may participate in federal elections.” Addressing concerns about documentation, he said, “If you are a citizen and you’ve lost your documents, or never had them, you could go to a state election official, swear to the details of your birth date and location or naturalization details, and register to vote.” Cassidy emphasized that an affidavit option is available for those unable to provide physical documents.

Cassidy has been active in public service beyond legislative work. He co-founded the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic to deliver free health and dental care according to the official website. He also advances initiatives aimed at reducing health care costs, supporting coastal restoration, and reforming mental health systems according to the official website.

Cassidy serves as chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee and sits on several other committees including Finance; Energy and Natural Resources; and Veterans Affairs according to the official website. He earned both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University according to the official website. Together with his wife—a retired breast cancer surgeon—he raised three children and enjoys time with their grandchild according to the official website.

In closing his speech on the Senate floor, Cassidy reiterated his call: “To my Democratic colleagues: Listen to the people. Pass the SAVE America Act.” The future of this legislation remains uncertain as debate continues.
