U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) said on Apr. 23 that he voted in favor of the Republican budget resolution, which is needed to move forward with a second reconciliation bill aimed at reopening and fully funding U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Cassidy said this step was necessary to prevent another shutdown.
The issue is important because it concerns federal funding for agencies responsible for border security, which affects both national safety and local communities in Louisiana.
“Republicans are working to protect the men and women who keep our border secure and Louisiana communities safe,” said Dr. Cassidy. “This shutdown has gone on long enough. It’s time for it to end.”
Cassidy serves on several Senate committees including Finance, Energy and Natural Resources, and Veterans Affairs, according to the official website. He has also advanced initiatives focused on reducing health care costs, supporting coastal restoration projects, and reforming mental health systems according to the official website.
Outside his legislative work, Cassidy co-founded the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic to provide free health and dental care for those without insurance according to the official website. He earned both his undergraduate degree and medical degree from Louisiana State University according to the official website.
Cassidy lives with his wife, a retired breast cancer surgeon; together they have raised three children and enjoy spending time with their grandchild according to the official website.
