John Kennedy, U.S. Senator from Louisiana, recently addressed the issue of hospital price transparency in a series of tweets on July 21, 2025. Kennedy discussed the wide range of prices for medical procedures and advocated for legislation aimed at increasing transparency in healthcare costs.
In one tweet, Kennedy highlighted disparities in hospital charges: “(4/8) One study found that hospitals in Atlanta charged patients anywhere from $435 to $7,000 for a colonoscopy. Yet patients had no way of knowing which hospital would charge them 16x more for the procedure.” (July 21, 2025).
Kennedy also referenced former President Donald Trump’s efforts to enforce existing regulations: “(7/8) President Trump has had enough of the games. He ordered his administration to crack down on hospitals that violate our rules. My Hospital Transparency Compliance Enforcement Act would help President Trump hold hospitals accountable by raising penalties for noncompliance.” (July 21, 2025).
In another post, Kennedy compared healthcare pricing transparency to menu pricing at national restaurant chains: “(8/8) If Louisianians can find the price of a side of mashed potatoes at any of the 600 Cracker Barrel locations around the country, they ought to be able to find the price of a blood test at the nearest hospital, too. My bill would help make this a reality.” (July 21, 2025).
The issue of healthcare price transparency has been an ongoing concern among policymakers and consumer advocates. In recent years, federal regulations have required hospitals to disclose standard charges for common procedures in an effort to improve competition and empower consumers with information about healthcare costs.
Senator Kennedy’s proposed Hospital Transparency Compliance Enforcement Act seeks to strengthen enforcement by increasing penalties for hospitals that fail to comply with these requirements.
