Senator John Kennedy Addresses Law Enforcement Loss, Budget Dispute, and Surveillance Concerns on Social Media

Senator John Kennedy, representing Louisiana in the U.S. Senate, posted a series of statements on October 8, 2025, addressing recent events involving law enforcement, federal budget negotiations, and concerns over surveillance of lawmakers.

In his first post of the day, Kennedy expressed condolences following an incident involving local law enforcement officers. On October 8, 2025, he wrote: “Our hearts are with the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office after the loss of Deputy Charles Riley and the injury of Deputy Brett Stassi Jr.

Becky and I are praying for Sheriff Stassi, his son, and Dep. Riley’s family. God bless all our courageous officers.”

Later that afternoon, Kennedy commented on the ongoing federal government shutdown, attributing it to disagreements between political parties over budget negotiations. In a post made at 15:19 UTC, he stated: “When the budget expired, Republicans voted to extend the current budget while we negotiate a new one.

Democrats, on the other hand, said, “We’ll shut down government unless you give us $1.5 TRILLION, and we’ll tell you how to spend it.”

That’s why we’re in a shutdown.”

Kennedy also addressed concerns about surveillance activities allegedly targeting Republican lawmakers by Special Counsel Jack Smith. At 16:20 UTC on October 8, he posted: “Jack Smith’s surveillance of Republican lawmakers is appalling.

This is the sort of thing that happens in a country whose Powerball jackpot is 287 chickens and a goat.

It’s not supposed to happen in America.”

Senator Kennedy has previously been vocal regarding issues of government spending and oversight. The government shutdown referenced in his posts follows ongoing disputes in Congress over federal appropriations and spending priorities.

Jack Smith was appointed as special counsel by the Department of Justice to oversee investigations related to former President Donald Trump and related matters. The allegations regarding surveillance have sparked debate among lawmakers over privacy and the scope of investigative powers.

The loss of Deputy Charles Riley and injury of Deputy Brett Stassi Jr. comes amid continued national discussion over risks faced by law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
