John Kennedy, U.S. Senator from Louisiana, posted a series of tweets on October 16 and 17, 2025, addressing issues related to immigration policy, the ongoing government shutdown, and Democratic Party leadership.
On October 16, Kennedy criticized Democrats’ stance on sanctuary cities and border security. He wrote, “Their love of sanctuary cities says it all: Many Democrats want open borders. They’d be a lot more intellectually honest if they would just admit that.”
Later that day, Kennedy commented on the lack of progress in resolving the government shutdown. He stated, “Short of locking Leader Thune and Senator Schumer in a room with Katie Porter until they have a deal, I don’t see an end to this shutdown in sight.”
On October 17, Kennedy questioned Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s control over his caucus during ongoing negotiations. He posted, “If Sen. Schumer is really the leader of his Democratic caucus, why are Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Sanders telling Republicans to negotiate with them at a CNN town hall? He’s totally lost control.”
These comments come amid heightened tensions in Congress regarding border policy and funding disputes leading to a government shutdown. The debate over sanctuary cities has been a recurring point of contention between Republicans and Democrats in recent years as lawmakers negotiate broader immigration reforms and federal budget allocations.
Senator John Kennedy has previously been vocal about his opposition to sanctuary city policies and has often criticized Democratic leadership for their handling of border security issues.
