Senator John Kennedy, representing Louisiana, commented on the ongoing government shutdown and related political issues in a series of posts on October 30, 2025.
In his first post, Kennedy drew a comparison between the shutdown and a soap opera, stating on October 30, 2025: “If this government shutdown were a soap opera, I’d call it ‘As the Stomach Turns.’ It’s not going to end until enough senators decide to take their egos out back and shoot them. @kasie”
Later that day, Kennedy addressed his Democratic colleagues regarding efforts to end the shutdown. On October 30, 2025, he wrote: “We’re not asking our Democratic colleagues to sell a kidney. We’re just asking them to re-open the government. I’ve voted to fund the government 13 times now, but Sen. Schumer is keeping it shut down until we spend $1.5 TRILLION more and gut the One Big Beautiful Bill.”
Kennedy also referenced an investigation by Special Counsel Jack Smith into former President Donald Trump and other conservatives. Quoting Senator Chuck Grassley’s perspective, Kennedy stated on October 30, 2025: “.@ChuckGrassley is right: The more we learn about Jack Smith’s ‘investigation’ of President Trump, my colleagues, and other conservatives, the more obvious it becomes that it was a political fishing expedition. The DOJ needs to make sure this weaponization NEVER happens again.”
The comments come amid an extended federal government shutdown that has led to debates over spending levels and policy priorities in Congress. Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass funding legislation for federal agencies; these impasses can have wide-ranging impacts on public services and federal workers.
Jack Smith was appointed as special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to oversee investigations involving former President Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents and actions surrounding the January 6 Capitol riot (https://www.justice.gov/sco). Investigations led by special counsels have historically been contentious topics within American politics.
