Senator John Kennedy marked the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary and Columbus Day in a series of posts on October 13, 2025, while also addressing the ongoing government shutdown and attributing its cause to the Democratic Party.
In a message posted at noon, Kennedy wrote, “For 250 years, the brave men and women of the @USNavy have proudly served and defended our nation at sea and around the world. Becky and I are forever grateful for their dedicated service to our great country. Happy birthday, U.S. Navy.” The U.S. Navy, established in 1775, celebrates its anniversary each October, commemorating its long-standing role in national defense.
Half an hour later, Kennedy acknowledged a federal holiday, stating, “Today we mark Columbus Day, a reminder of a journey that shaped the course of our country’s history.” Columbus Day is observed annually on the second Monday of October to recognize Christopher Columbus’s landing in the Americas in 1492.
Later that afternoon, Kennedy commented on the ongoing government shutdown with a critique of the opposing party: “My Democratic friends are trying to muddy the water to make it look deep—but this shutdown is entirely because of their unreasonable demands.” Government shutdowns in the United States often result from legislative deadlock over federal budget negotiations, with both major parties frequently assigning blame for impasses.
Senator John Kennedy represents Louisiana in the U.S. Senate and is a member of the Republican Party.
