Senator John Kennedy announced on Apr. 23 that Louisiana will receive nearly $29.9 million in federal funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support disaster recovery and repairs following Hurricanes Laura and Ida.
The funding aims to help communities recover from significant damage caused by these storms, with specific allocations for Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes, the city of Lake Charles, and other affected areas. These resources are intended to assist with rebuilding efforts and strengthening flood mitigation measures.
“Louisianians remember all too well the devastation left by hurricanes like Laura and Ida in their communities—and they have worked tirelessly to rebuild and strengthen flood mitigation efforts. This $29.9 million will support Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes, the city of Lake Charles and other areas of our state recover from the costly damage these severe storms caused,” said Kennedy.
According to details released by Kennedy’s office, funds include over $10 million for repairs at the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux; more than $8.7 million for restoring South Lafourche High School buildings; approximately $5 million for public building repairs in Terrebonne Parish; about $2.4 million for management costs at the Louisiana Department of Health; roughly $1.85 million for management costs at the Society of the Roman Catholic Church of the Diocese of Lake Charles; and nearly $1.7 million toward permanent repairs at Greater St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church in Lake Charles.
Kennedy holds degrees including a magna cum laude in political science, philosophy, and economics from Vanderbilt University as well as law degrees from both Oxford University and University of Virginia according to his official website. He serves on Senate committees covering appropriations, banking, budget, judiciary matters according to his official website, holds top Republican positions on subcommittees focused on energy policy according to his official website, contributes as an adjunct professor according to his official website, has authored works on constitutional law according to his official website, served as executive editor of a law review journal while also leading his class at Vanderbilt University according to his official website.
The allocation is part of ongoing federal efforts aimed at supporting local governments’ recovery work after natural disasters.
