Louisiana is set to receive nearly $50 million from the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund to support waterfowl habitat conservation and expand public access at two national wildlife refuges. The funding, totaling $49,838,000, was approved by the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission and is sourced mainly from sales of Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamps, also known as Duck Stamps.
Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) announced the allocation on Thursday. “Whether it’s duck hunting at sunrise or casting a line in the afternoon, Louisianans know how important the outdoors are to our way of life,” said Dr. Cassidy. “This funding allows folks to keep enjoying while boosting local economies in North Louisiana.”
Of the total amount, $35,238,000 will go to Upper Ouachita National Wildlife Refuge for conserving 17,023 acres. Another $14,600,000 will be directed to Red River National Wildlife Refuge for conserving 3,285 acres. These investments aim to enhance migratory bird habitats and increase opportunities for hunting, fishing, birdwatching and other recreational activities that contribute economically to local communities.
