U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D., posted a series of messages on social media in August 2025 addressing issues related to the shrimp industry and U.S. manufacturing standards.
On August 19, 2025, Cassidy encouraged consumers to support local seafood, stating, “Eat Gulf shrimp.”
Later that day, he commented on international trade practices, specifically referencing China’s labor and environmental standards. Cassidy wrote on August 19, “.@USTradeRep Greer is right. China uses low labor and environmental standards to undercut our workers and hollow out U.S. manufacturing. My Foreign Pollution Fee Act makes them pay and brings American manufacturing BACK!”
The following day, Cassidy addressed competition from India in the shrimp market. On August 20, he posted: “India’s shrimp farmers are panicking. Good.
For too long they undercut Louisiana shrimpers with cheap, low-standard product. @POTUS’s tariffs put our shrimpers first and keep the catch local!”
Senator Cassidy represents Louisiana, a state where the seafood industry—particularly Gulf shrimping—is a significant part of the economy. The senator has been vocal about supporting local industries against what he describes as unfair foreign competition using lower production standards.
Recent federal policy changes have included increased tariffs on imported seafood products from countries such as India in response to concerns about pricing and quality standards compared to domestic producers.
