U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D., has recently used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and recent political negotiations. In a series of posts on October 8 and 9, 2025, Cassidy criticized the impact of the shutdown on Louisiana families and expressed his views on the motivations behind the political impasse.
On October 8, Cassidy highlighted the local impact of the government shutdown in a post: “The elderly couple in Calcasieu. The young family in St. Charles. The single mother in St. Bernard. Middle-class families across Louisiana are already taking it on the chin. The Schumer Shutdown is another gut punch, and it’s these folks who feel it the most.”
Later that evening, Cassidy acknowledged recent negotiations at the federal level, posting: “Thank you, Mr. President, for negotiating this historic deal.” (October 9).
In a subsequent post on October 9, Cassidy criticized Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democratic lawmakers regarding their approach to the shutdown: “He said the quiet part out loud. For Senator Schumer and the Democrats, the Schumer Shutdown isn’t about the American people. It’s a political game they think they’re winning. While they’re celebrating, our troops, border agents, and working families are the ones paying the”.
Government shutdowns have historically resulted from disagreements between Congress and the President over federal funding legislation. Such shutdowns can lead to disruptions in public services and delays in pay for federal employees including military personnel and border agents. Political leaders often use terms like “Schumer Shutdown” or “Trump Shutdown” to assign blame for these events.
Senator Bill Cassidy represents Louisiana in the U.S. Senate and has previously focused on issues affecting middle-class families within his state.
