U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D., posted a series of statements on October 2, 2025, addressing the ongoing government shutdown and assigning responsibility to Senate Democrats.
In his first post at 15:29 UTC, Cassidy wrote, “Republicans want to open the government. @SenateDems, pushed by their radical base, are forcing the Schumer Shutdown as a way to fight President Trump.”
Later that day at 17:20 UTC, Cassidy commented on communication methods in politics: “Truly, nothing says ‘serious governing’ like cartoon kittens explaining fiscal policy. What’s next, sock puppets?”
At 18:09 UTC on the same day, Cassidy reiterated his criticism of Senate Democrats and outlined some consequences of the shutdown: “The Schumer Shutdown is here. Senate Democrats are holding the government hostage and denying our troops pay by demanding over $1 TRILLION in partisan spending. But they don’t have the power to shut down everything—essential services like Social Security checks and emergency”
Government shutdowns occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations bills or continuing resolutions funding federal agencies and operations. During these periods, many federal employees are furloughed or work without pay, while essential services such as Social Security payments and emergency functions continue.
Senator Bill Cassidy represents Louisiana in the U.S. Senate and is a member of the Republican Party.
