U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D., announced via social media that President Donald Trump has signed the HALT Fentanyl Act into law, marking a significant legislative development in efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking and abuse.

On July 16, 2025, Cassidy posted, “A historic moment with President Trump as he signs my HALT Fentanyl Act into law.” Later that evening, he shared another update stating, “President Trump signed my HALT Fentanyl Act into law— ‘one of the more important things that we’ll ever sign!’ Thanks, Mr. President, for taking this big step against the scourge of fentanyl. Proud to work alongside you.” The following day, Cassidy reiterated his support for the legislation by posting, “Standing with President Trump to HALT fentanyl and MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN!”

The HALT Fentanyl Act aims to address the growing crisis of fentanyl-related overdoses in the United States by increasing penalties for trafficking and expanding enforcement tools available to federal agencies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a sharp rise in overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl over recent years.

Senator Cassidy represents Louisiana in the U.S. Senate and is known for his focus on healthcare policy and public health initiatives.
