U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued a statement following the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ (ASPS) public acknowledgment of the dangers associated with gender transition procedures for children.
“Dangerous, irreversible gender transition surgeries on children must end. ASPS is right to acknowledge this reality. Others should follow suit,” said Dr. Cassidy. “As Chairman of the HELP Committee, I will continue to work with President Trump to protect children from irreversible harm.”
Cassidy has been investigating medical organizations, provider groups, and insurers regarding their promotion of gender transition procedures for minors without what he describes as reliable scientific data. He has called for these entities to comply with President Trump’s executive order aimed at preventing children from undergoing chemical and surgical castration.
Recently, Cassidy joined Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at an event where a new policy was announced to stop federal funds from supporting these procedures for minors. In addition, he introduced legislation titled the No Subsidies for Gender Transition Procedures Act, which would prohibit taxpayer funding for such procedures under Medicaid, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the Affordable Care Act.
The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee works on legislation related to public health and education issues in the United States and oversees federal agencies such as the FDA and NIH (official website). As chair during the 119th Congress (official website), Cassidy plays a key role in shaping federal policy affecting health care nationwide (official website).
