U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, is seeking feedback from stakeholders about the American Medical Association’s (AMA) control over Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. The inquiry focuses on how this monopoly may affect patients, health care providers, and overall costs.
Cassidy has called for individuals and organizations with experience in CPT coding contracts with the AMA to respond to a committee questionnaire. This request comes as part of ongoing efforts by the HELP Committee to address health care costs for Americans.
So far, Cassidy says that the AMA has not adequately answered questions or cooperated with the committee’s investigation. He stated that if the AMA does not provide a complete and transparent response by December 15, 2025, he will seek answers through other methods.
“The federal government mandated the use of CPT codes. This creates the potential for abuse in that if someone has to buy your product, you can charge them what you want,” said Dr. Cassidy. “There may be nothing wrong here, but we should get answers to make sure the CPT system is working for the American patient and for the American health care system.”
