U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, called on Congress to take action to reform college athletics in an op-ed published on Mar. 30. Cassidy said current conditions put student-athletes at risk and urged lawmakers to create stability for students navigating changes in college sports.

The issue matters because recent court decisions and changing rules have created confusion for student-athletes and universities. Cassidy said that these developments have opened the door to exploitation and threaten opportunities for students who rely on sports scholarships as a pathway to higher education.

“I talk to athletes, coaches, students, parents, and fans who all say the same thing: college sports are a mess,” Cassidy wrote. “Our mission is to set students up for success. Not only on the field or in the classroom, but in their careers after college.” He continued: “We have a responsibility to meet the moment, get off the sidelines, and get this right. My committee is focused on finding a solution.”

Cassidy explained that less than two percent of college athletes will play professionally while most do not graduate or maintain ties with their schools due to frequent transfers. He warned that proposals treating student-athletes as employees could lead universities—especially smaller ones—to cut non-revenue sports programs or scholarships because of increased costs. According to Cassidy’s account of testimony from university officials at a recent committee roundtable discussion, such changes could eliminate entire teams or departments.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee works on legislation concerning public health and education issues with oversight over agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to its official website. The committee also influences federal regulations affecting health care and education across the country according to its official website.

Cassidy has served as chair during this session of Congress according to its official website. The committee provides oversight for federal laws related to health and labor policy decisions according to its official website.

In his closing remarks within the op-ed Cassidy wrote: “College sports are more than just games or championships; they are the heartbeat of communities across the nation… We have a responsibility to meet the moment… My committee is focused on finding a solution.”
