U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) called on Senate Democrats to support the SAVE America Act in a floor speech delivered on Apr. 23. The proposed legislation would require proof of citizenship for voting in federal elections, and Cassidy said it is aimed at ensuring election security.
Cassidy said the bill is designed to protect the integrity of elections by mandating photo identification or proof of citizenship at polling places, which he described as a common practice in daily life. “The SAVE America Act does not make it harder to vote; it ensures that only American citizens vote in American elections,” Cassidy said.
He added that public opinion supports such measures, citing data showing high percentages of both Democratic and Republican voters favoring photo ID requirements at the polls. According to Cassidy, “71 percent of Democrats and 95 percent of Republicans agree you should have to show a photo ID when you go to vote.” He argued that opposition from some members of Congress is out of step with their constituents’ views.
Cassidy addressed concerns about access for those lacking documentation by noting an alternative process included in the bill: “We’ve said, if you are a citizen and you’ve lost your documents, or never had them, you could go to a state election official, swear to the details…and register to vote.” He explained this process is already available in Louisiana and would be extended nationwide under the act.
In addition to his legislative work on voting issues, Cassidy has contributed significantly outside politics. He co-founded the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic offering free health and dental care for uninsured individuals according to his official website. He also advances initiatives focused on reducing health care costs, supporting coastal restoration projects, and reforming mental health systems according to his official website.
Cassidy serves on several key committees including Finance; Energy and Natural Resources; and Veterans Affairs according to his official website. He earned undergraduate and medical degrees from Louisiana State University according to his official website.
Reflecting on broader implications during his speech, Cassidy concluded: “We need to get back to serving the people. And the people are asking for secure elections. The SAVE America Act helps get that done.”
