U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and Marsha Blackburn introduced legislation on April 17 to prevent federal Title X funds from being allocated to Planned Parenthood or any organization that performs or finances abortions. The bill, known as the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, is co-sponsored by 17 other Republican senators.
The proposed legislation aims to change how federal family-planning grants are distributed, a matter that affects both public health funding and ongoing debates over taxpayer support for abortion services. The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee plays a central role in shaping such policies and regulations across the United States, according to the official website.
Cassidy said, “Louisiana families want their tax dollars to support families, not abortion businesses that kill unborn babies and hurt mothers. I’m proud to co-lead this bill to end a policy that subsidizes Planned Parenthood on the taxpayers’ dime.” Blackburn added, “Taxpayers should not have to spend a penny on abortions. The Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act would protect life and stop federal funds from going to entities that perform abortions by closing loopholes in federal law.”
The bill would amend the Public Health Service Act so that the Department of Health and Human Services cannot provide grants under Title X for organizations involved with abortion services or funding. It also requires an annual report from HHS listing grantees who perform abortions under exceptions as well as detailing where grant money goes.
Supporters of this legislation include several advocacy groups such as Susan B Anthony Pro-Life America and March for Life Action. Cassidy served as chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee during the 119th Congress according to the official website.
The committee itself is responsible for oversight of key health agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), focusing broadly on health policy in addition to education and labor issues according to information provided by its official website.
