U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Tim Scott (R-SC), and Ted Cruz (R-TX), along with former U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, have published a joint op-ed in Fox News Digital advocating for the recent federal expansion of school choice. The group described the new legislation, known as the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act, as a significant step to ensure that children are not limited by failing schools.
“The consequences of academic failure are far more consequential than just failing a grade. Poor academic performance dramatically increases the likelihood of poverty, incarceration, joblessness, and drug abuse,” wrote the group.
“It was long past time for Washington to act – and we did so decisively,” they continued.
“Advancing President Trump’s pro-family, pro-student agenda marks the beginning of a historic era – one that uplifts students, empowers families, overcomes poverty, and secures a brighter, freer future for generations to come,” they concluded.
The op-ed highlights that on Independence Day President Donald Trump signed into law what is described as the most consequential federal school choice legislation in U.S. history. This law introduces educational freedom as a right for students and families nationwide.
According to its supporters, quality education is essential for success and is key to realizing opportunities in America. They argue that previous approaches forced parents into limited options which often failed many students—especially those from low-income or minority backgrounds—by trapping them in underperforming schools.
The new law establishes a tax credit scholarship program set to begin in 2027. Individuals will be able to receive up to $1,700 per year as a dollar-for-dollar tax credit for donations made to educational nonprofits funding K-12 scholarships for low- and middle-income students. These scholarships can be used for tuition, books, tutoring services, transportation costs, uniforms, special needs support services and educational technology; recipients will not pay taxes on these scholarships.
Supporters estimate this measure will provide tens of billions of dollars in scholarships across the country. They believe millions of families will gain greater control over their children’s education by being able to select schools aligning with their values.
Currently thirty states operate at least one private school choice program. The recently passed federal provision now allows all states the option to participate or not.
The op-ed also notes that every Democrat in Congress voted against this bill but credits President Trump and Republicans with passing it into law. Its authors say this reform aims to give current and future generations improved access to high-quality education regardless of race or income level.
