On May 15, 2024, a bipartisan resolution was introduced by Congresswoman Julia Letlow (R-LA), Congressman Michael Guest (R-MS), Congressman Chris Pappas (D-NH), and Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D-VA). The resolution aims to honor and memorialize law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. H. Res. 1226 also expresses unwavering support for law enforcement across the nation and underscores the importance of equipping police officers with necessary resources to ensure community safety.
"Every year, hundreds of thousands of men and women in the police force leave their homes every day to protect their communities, with no guarantee they will make it home," said Rep. Letlow. "I’m honored to help lead this legislation with my colleagues as we stand together and pay tribute to the brave men and women in blue who have given their lives in service, and paid the ultimate sacrifice to our communities."
Rep. Guest added that police officers are the heroes of our communities, protecting us from crime and defending innocent citizens from those who seek to do harm. He expressed his honor in leading this legislation that supports law enforcement officers and pays tribute to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
“Police Week is an annual commemoration to thank our brave law enforcement officers for the work they do every day to keep our communities safe," said Rep. Pappas. He emphasized that those who put on the uniform deserve our thanks and gratitude, adding that we must work to ensure our police departments have the resources they need.
"As a former federal law enforcement officer myself, I also understand firsthand the responsibilities, stresses, and dangers associated with the job," said Rep. Spanberger. She expressed her humility in honoring fallen heroes during National Police Week.
The proposed legislation has garnered support from 86 original cosponsors including Ralph Norman (SC-05), Garret Graves (LA-06), Jake LaTurner (KS-02), Bill Huizenga (MI-04), Dan Crenshaw (TX-02), and many others.
