U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, representing Louisiana, has released a video statement marking the one-year anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks that resulted in the deaths of over a thousand Israelis and Americans. In conjunction with this, he has joined forces with U.S. Senator Joni Ernst from Iowa and other members of the Republican Conference to introduce a resolution condemning Iran-backed Hamas for its actions. The resolution also emphasizes support for Israel's survival and calls for the release of American hostages.
"October 7 left an indelible mark on the Jewish State of Israel," stated Dr. Cassidy in his message. He further emphasized a commitment to standing with Israel, efforts to bring remaining hostages home, including American citizens, and a pledge to combat antisemitism.
Senator Ernst recalled her immediate response to last year's attacks by traveling to Israel: "This time last year, I woke up in the Middle East to the unbearable news that Israel was under attack by Iran-backed terrorists and Americans were being killed and taken hostage." She highlighted her continued work across various locations—Jerusalem, Washington, or Iowa—to hold accountable those responsible and ensure hostages are returned safely.
The Senate Republican Conference collectively opposes violent antisemitic protests and condemns Hamas' use of rape as a weapon of war. The resolution affirms Israel's right to self-defense and stresses preventing Hamas from regrouping in order to avoid repeating past tragedies.
Cassidy reflected on his visit as part of a Congressional delegation following the attacks: "I sat with families who grieved for their loved ones and others who prayed for their children's safe return." He condemned Hamas' targeting of civilians while using Palestinians as human shields during conflicts.
As ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee (HELP), Cassidy is leading legislative efforts against antisemitism on college campuses post-October 7 attacks. This includes bipartisan legislation like the Protecting Students on Campus Act aimed at safeguarding students from discrimination.
