Repealing the unfair, bureaucratic Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset are among my top priorities for the 118th Congress. While our efforts last year were blocked by the Democratic Leadership in the House, I’m committed to working day in and day out until we finally pass a solution. Earlier this year, I joined a bipartisan group of 8 colleagues to introduce H.R. 82 – the Social Security Fairness Act. This bill would completely repeal WEP and GPO in their entirety and ensure that our hardworking teachers, firefighters, police officers, and public servants are no longer penalized and denied the money that they paid into Social Security. As of July 2023, H.R. 82 has 287 cosponsors and we are diligently working to add more support to the bill.

In May 2023, I joined a bipartisan congressional panel, where I met with constituents from across this country, in hearing about this burdensome bureaucratic rule that affects over 2.5 million Americans. As I travel across the Fifth District, this remains a top concern from hardworking Louisianans who have been unjustly penalized. We will continue pushing to repeal this inequity and work to educate our colleagues about the importance of righting this wrong.

We’re hopeful that the House Ways & Means Committee will consider this bill, and we will keep you updated on its’ progress. To read more about the bill, click HERE.
