WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), in a recent speech on the Senate floor, urged Congress to take action to address the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Cassidy highlighted the far-reaching impact of the program and emphasized the need for reforms to ensure affordability and accessibility for all Americans.

Cassidy pointed out the widespread effects of the NFIP, stating, "Risk Rating 2.0 affects Louisiana, the Gulf Coast, and frankly all coasts, or any place where there is a river or a stream that can overflow." He further noted the financial burden on lower-income individuals, with 62% of NFIP policies held in areas below the national median household income.

The senator highlighted the extensive damages caused by flooding across the United States, stating, "Forty-four of 50 states have had over $50 million of NFIP claims from 1978 to 2021." He emphasized the urgency of the situation, calling for action to address the escalating costs and ensure the program's sustainability.

"There’s a consensus that no family in America should be forced to move because of unaffordable flood insurance premiums," Cassidy stressed, underlining the importance of maintaining affordability and accountability within the NFIP.

In a direct challenge to his colleagues, Cassidy urged them to prioritize understanding and addressing the flood insurance crisis. He emphasized the need for legislative reforms to better serve Americans in all states affected by flooding.

Cassidy's efforts to bring attention to the NFIP crisis have included reintroducing the National Flood Insurance Program Reauthorization Act and engaging in discussions with community leaders and advocates. His ongoing advocacy seeks to protect homeowners, small business owners, and the real estate market from the challenges posed by escalating insurance premiums.

The senator's call to action comes amidst a growing recognition of the urgent need for Congress to address the flaws within the NFIP and ensure the program's effectiveness in protecting vulnerable communities across the nation.
