WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), Chris Coons (D-DE), Senate Co-Chairs of the National Service Congressional Caucus, Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and House of Representatives Co-Chairs Garret Graves (R-LA-06) and Doris Matsui (D-CA-07) have come together to celebrate AmeriCorps Week, which runs from March 10-16, 2024. The bipartisan group released a resolution commemorating the occasion, highlighting the importance of AmeriCorps in providing national service opportunities and pathways to education.
Dr. Cassidy emphasized the dedication of AmeriCorps members, stating, “AmeriCorps members dedicate their lives to those who need a helping hand. From empowering students in the classroom to supporting veterans transitioning to civilian life, they help build stronger communities.”
Senator Coons praised the work of AmeriCorps members over the past 30 years, saying, “Over the past three decades, more than 1 million AmeriCorps members have rolled up their sleeves and gotten things done for our nation. This week, we celebrate their work to mentor students, tackle food insecurity, improve public health, respond to disasters, protect the environment, and support local communities across our country.”
Michael D. Smith, CEO of AmeriCorps, expressed gratitude towards the bipartisan leaders of the National Service Congressional Caucus for their efforts in supporting national service and reducing barriers to serve. He stated, “The Biden-Harris administration believes in the transformative power of service to tackle pressing challenges while inspiring unity.”
AnnMaura Connolly, President of Voices for National Service, highlighted the significance of AmeriCorps' 30th anniversary and the impact of young people responding to critical needs in the country. She thanked the leaders of the National Service Congressional Caucus for their commitment to expanding and strengthening AmeriCorps.
Kaira Esgate, CEO of America’s Service Commissions, commended the National Service Caucus for its bipartisan efforts in promoting national service and ensuring resources for AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps Seniors. She emphasized the importance of addressing key needs in communities and building workforce pathways through service opportunities.
