WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), has spoken out in response to the recent whistleblower report regarding the safety of Indian shrimp imported into the United States. Dr. Cassidy expressed his concerns after the Outlaw Ocean Project's report highlighted issues at the Choice Canning Company’s shrimp processing facility in India.

"Today’s report outlining the abuses at Choice Canning Company’s shrimp processing factory in India makes clear why Indian shrimp does not belong on the shelf alongside Louisiana shrimp," emphasized Dr. Cassidy. He further pointed out that "Indian shrimp relies on forced labor and is pumped full of illegal antibiotics. USTR needs to act to ensure American consumers are not put in harm’s way."

In his efforts to safeguard the Louisiana shrimp industry from unfair trade practices, Cassidy has introduced legislation aimed at protecting local interests. Last year, he introduced two bills to address the dumping of cheap shrimp and produce from India into U.S. markets. The Prioritizing Offensive Agricultural Disputes and Enforcement Act and the India Shrimp Tariff Act aim to uphold U.S. health standards while safeguarding the Louisiana agricultural sector.

Moreover, Cassidy's advocacy led to the retention of anti-dumping orders for frozen warmwater shrimp from various countries, including India, China, Thailand, and Vietnam. Additionally, he secured over $27 million for Louisiana fisheries, shrimpers, and fishing communities affected by natural disasters between 2017 and 2022.

Cassidy's unwavering commitment to protecting American consumers and supporting local industries underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and integrity of the food supply chain.
