U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) has criticized the Biden administration for its decision to freeze all pending non-Free Trade Agreement (FTA) liquefied natural gas (LNG) export permit applications. Speaking during a U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing, Senator Cassidy argued that this policy is detrimental to American working families and U.S. allies.
Cassidy highlighted the impact on American workers, stating, "This policy is a war on the American worker." He pointed out the significant number of jobs created by LNG facilities, stating, "The number of jobs, good-paying jobs for people who otherwise would not have that economic opportunity, is incredible." Cassidy criticized the administration for creating uncertainty due to political considerations, referring to their alignment with the climate lobby.
Furthermore, Cassidy emphasized the negative consequences for European allies who heavily rely on American LNG exports since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He argued that if Europe cannot access natural gas from the United States, they will be forced to turn to other sources, including the Iranian regime. Cassidy stated, "If the United States doesn't provide it, the Qataris, the Iranians, and the Russians will probably provide it."
Dr. James Watson, Secretary General of Eurogas, supported Cassidy's viewpoint, acknowledging that if the U.S. stops their exports, Europe will have to seek natural gas from alternative sources, including adversaries. He expressed concern about the lack of a clear rationale behind the administration's decision and highlighted the negative impact on American workers and allies.
This criticism from Cassidy follows his leadership in sending a letter with 25 Republican colleagues to the Biden administration, opposing the freeze on LNG export permits. He also introduced the Unlocking Domestic LNG Potential Act, which aims to depoliticize the export of American liquefied natural gas by giving sole authority over the approval process to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
In an op-ed written earlier this month with U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), Cassidy underscored the economic, environmental, and national security implications of President Biden's decision to halt new LNG export projects. Additionally, Cassidy raised concerns during a previous hearing about the rumors surrounding this decision and emphasized the importance of U.S. LNG exports for energy, economic growth, and national security.
The Biden administration's decision to freeze pending LNG export permits continues to face scrutiny from Senator Cassidy and his Republican colleagues. They argue that this policy not only harms American workers but also weakens relationships with European allies.
