WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), member of the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, and Ted Cruz (R-TX) have raised concerns with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regarding the lack of progress on Delfin LNG LLC's application for an extension to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to a non-FTA country.
In a letter to Secretary Granholm, the senators highlighted that DOE's current pause on new LNG export licenses does not apply to extensions of existing projects. They emphasized the importance of Delfin's Floating LNG Project, stating, "Construction of the project has already begun, and there were extenuating circumstances beyond Delfin’s control that caused significant delays in the export date."
The senators underscored the critical role of Delfin's project in meeting the natural gas needs of allies, with secured long-term contracts totaling $19 billion. They urged timely consideration of Delfin's extension application to prevent potential setbacks and ensure the project's success.
Senator Cassidy has been a vocal advocate for American LNG exports, particularly in light of the Biden administration's freeze on pending applications. He has introduced legislation to reverse the decision and prioritize U.S. LNG exports to countries affected by geopolitical challenges.
The senators' efforts aim to support the growth of the LNG industry, safeguard energy security, and strengthen international partnerships. Their engagement with the DOE reflects a commitment to advancing vital energy infrastructure projects for the benefit of both domestic and global stakeholders.
