A summit aimed at fostering rural community development was hosted by U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy in Leesville, Louisiana. This event marked the third Rural Community Funding Summit of 2024, where Cassidy sought to connect local officials from central Louisiana with federal and state agencies responsible for distributing funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

Senator Cassidy stated, "My goal in working on the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill was to bring opportunity to Louisiana to rebuild our infrastructure. My goal for the summit is to connect public officials in Rapides, Vernon, Beauregard, and throughout Cenla with these opportunities." He expressed satisfaction at seeing officials eager to leverage these resources for their communities.

The IIJA has already facilitated significant improvements in the region. Notable projects include the authorization of the I-14 corridor through Leesville and substantial funding for various initiatives. In Vernon Parish, millions have been allocated for road enhancements and roundabout construction. The East Central Vernon Water System received $1.3 million from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund to improve drinking water quality, while over $300,000 was directed to upgrades at Leesville City Airport.

Further financial support includes $15 million for the J. Bennett Johnston Waterway and more than $11 million as a RAISE grant to extend CC Bel Road. Additionally, over $9.8 million has been designated for replacing school buses in Rapides Parish.

Leesville Mayor Rick Allen welcomed Cassidy and expressed gratitude for his efforts. "Thanks to Senator Cassidy’s infrastructure bill, money has already been delivered to upgrade key roads and the Leesville City Airport," said Mayor Allen. He added appreciation for the opportunities presented by the bill and acknowledged Cassidy's support for Fort Johnson troops.
