U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy recently addressed the Senate floor, highlighting the critical need for Congress to tackle the national debt as part of preserving what he refers to as the "American Dream." His remarks came ahead of a crucial budget resolution vote.
"President Trump recognizes the relationship between our national debt and the family’s ability to achieve the American Dream... Balancing the budget is a key part of preserving the American dream," stated Dr. Cassidy.
Cassidy emphasized a commitment from congressional leadership to manage the bill's costs, potentially through reconciliation, to instill confidence among investors and job creators. "Given the commitment from leadership to pay for this bill by a variety of means, whether it is within the reconciliation vehicle or outside of that process, and the need to reestablish confidence among those making business decisions and creating jobs, I will vote for this budget resolution," he said.
Reflecting on recent inflation and high interest rates under the Biden administration, Cassidy voiced concern over borrowing by the federal government competing with individuals and businesses for available funds. "How much money the federal government borrows and how much this budget resolution leads to increased indebtedness sounds abstract but has a real impact on the American Dream," he warned.
Cassidy called for living within the nation's means, drawing inspiration from family budget management. He quoted Treasury Secretary Bessent, who had cautioned about a burgeoning debt crisis: "our escalating debt crisis hurts national security in three key takeaways: it diminishes our financial 'surge capacity,' it robs our private sector of capital for productive investment, and it imperils America’s preeminent role in international financial markets."
While Cassidy acknowledged the procedural nature of the current budget resolution, he criticized the use of "current policy" as a baseline, warning it boosts the bill's cost by $3.8 trillion. Cassidy referred to this as setting a harmful precedent.
Despite these concerns, Cassidy supported the budget resolution, citing commitments to scrutinize budget details and enhance economic efficiency. "I have been assured that there is a commitment in other ways to pay for an eventual reconciliation bill," he explained. Cassidy praised oil and gas exploration as a potential revenue booster while advocating for innovative approaches to address national debt.
Cassidy concluded by expressing his vision for America, emphasizing the importance of creating opportunities for citizens to achieve their full potential: "I hope, my expectation is that through this process we will create more opportunity to express God-given gifts, to achieve the American Dream."
