U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana has voiced concerns over what he describes as efforts by Congressional Democrats to hinder offshore energy development. According to Cassidy, these efforts include urging President Joe Biden to permanently withdraw unleased areas in the Outer Continental Shelf from future energy projects.

Cassidy emphasized the potential benefits of offshore energy development, stating, "Offshore energy development is good for jobs, good for Louisiana, good for our national security, and reduces inflation." He criticized moves that could limit such development as part of a broader "Biden-Harris war on energy and the American worker."

Previously, Cassidy introduced several legislative measures aimed at promoting domestic energy production. These include the WHALE Act, the Offshore Energy Security Act of 2023, and the Supporting Made in America Energy Act. These initiatives are designed to mandate oil and gas lease sales and counteract proposals that would restrict activity in the Outer Continental Shelf.

The Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) ensures that revenues from offshore leasing contribute to coastal restoration under Louisiana's state constitution. However, 2024 marks a significant change as it is the first year without an offshore oil and gas lease sale in the Gulf since 1965.
