U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy have successfully advanced legislation to rename a post office in Rayville, Louisiana, in honor of the late Luke Letlow. The bill, which passed the U.S. Senate last night, is now awaiting the President's signature to become law.
Luke Letlow was a native of Start, Louisiana, known for his dedication to public service. He was elected in 2020 to represent Louisiana's 5th Congressional District but tragically passed away from COVID-19 complications before taking office.
“Luke’s death at too young of an age due to COVID robbed his family, Louisiana, and our nation of a man who served others his entire professional life,” stated Dr. Cassidy. “This post office naming memorializes his work, his life, and the tragedy of COVID.”
Senator Kennedy expressed gratitude for Letlow's contributions: “Luke Letlow dedicated his career to improving the lives of Louisianians, and our state is very grateful for his life and contributions.” He added that renaming the Rayville post office ensures that "his memory will live on for years to come in Richland Parish."
Representative Julia Letlow also shared her appreciation: “I’m so deeply touched by my Senate colleagues Senator Bill Cassidy and Senator John Kennedy for their support to finalize the renaming of the Rayville Post Office in Luke’s honor.” She noted that Luke had a deep affection for Richland Parish and would consider this recognition significant.
Cassidy delivered a speech on the Senate floor highlighting Luke Letlow’s service. Companion legislation was introduced by Representative Steve Scalise with backing from all members of Louisiana's House delegation, including Representative Julia Letlow. It cleared the U.S. House on May 7, 2024.
