U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, Maggie Hassan, Eric Schmitt, and Mark Kelly have announced the Senate's unanimous approval of the Gold Star and Surviving Spouse Career Services Act. This legislation aims to enhance job counseling services for spouses of Armed Forces members who died while on active duty. The initiative will be implemented through the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program under the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service.
Dr. Cassidy expressed his commitment to supporting families who have suffered such losses: “The families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice deserve the best we have to offer,” he stated. He sees this bill as a step toward ensuring these families receive necessary services.
Senator Hassan emphasized the need to support families after their loss: “We owe it to the families of fallen service members to do all that we can to support them after their devastating loss.” She called on her House colleagues for further collaboration on this bipartisan effort.
Senator Schmitt highlighted the bill's common-sense approach: “This bill is a common sense, bi-partisan step forward to make sure the families of those who gave their lives for our country are able to receive the services they need.”
Senator Kelly also supported expanding resources for these families: “I am pleased the Senate passed this important bill that honored our commitment to the families of service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
Cassidy has been actively advocating for veterans and their families, with past initiatives including legislation like last year's Solid Start Act aimed at connecting veterans with essential programs and benefits post-military separation.
