U.S. Senators have introduced a new piece of legislation aimed at supporting democratic efforts in Venezuela. The Venezuela Advancing Liberty, Opportunity, and Rights Act (VALOR Act) was presented by Senators Bill Cassidy, Jim Risch, Michael Bennet, John Barrasso, Rick Scott, Dan Sullivan, and Pete Ricketts.

"The people of Venezuela rightfully elected President-Elect Edmundo Gonzalez," stated Dr. Cassidy. He emphasized the contrast between democracy and dictatorship and the need for U.S. support to help Venezuelans reclaim their power.

Senator Risch expressed concerns about the Maduro regime's threat to U.S. national security and regional stability. "Sanctions imposed under The VALOR Act will reduce the resources the regime has at its disposal to harm Americans and American interests," he said.

Senator Bennet highlighted that President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia won the July 2024 elections decisively but is being prevented from taking office by Nicolás Maduro's refusal to recognize election results. Bennet stressed that this bipartisan legislation demonstrates U.S. support for restoring democracy in Venezuela.

Senator Barrasso condemned Maduro's attempts to maintain power through intimidation despite Venezuelans' clear demand for change. He called the VALOR Act an important step toward helping Venezuelans transition to democracy.

"The Venezuelan people have made it overwhelmingly clear that President-elect Edmundo González is their rightful leader," Senator Scott declared. He warned against any attempts by Maduro to hold onto power illegitimately as González prepares for his inauguration on January 10th.

Senator Sullivan criticized Maduro’s plans for an unconstitutional swearing-in on January 10th following a sham electoral victory. He underscored the importance of defending Venezuelans' voting integrity due to its implications on transnational crime and alliances with adversaries like China.

The VALOR Act aims to address these issues by implementing sanctions designed to limit resources available to Maduro's regime.
