Legislation spearheaded by Representative Julia Letlow aimed at securing retirement benefits for public servants has been enacted. The Social Security Fairness Act addresses the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which have reduced retirement benefits for millions of public employees.

These provisions currently affect over two million Americans, including many in Louisiana, by limiting their full Social Security benefits.

“Our state and local employees work tirelessly to educate our students, respond to emergencies, protect public safety and more. After years of effort, I'm thrilled to see our legislation signed into law to eliminate harmful provisions that threaten these public servants' earned Social Security benefits,” said Congresswoman Julia Letlow. “This is a milestone moment in the fight to ensure retirement security for all of Louisiana's public servants.”

The bill, H.R. 82, was approved with bipartisan support by the House on November 12 and by the Senate on December 21.

Throughout her time in Congress, Letlow has been an advocate on this issue, sharing stories from those impacted by WEP and GPO before the House Ways & Means Committee.
