In anticipation of a severe cold front forecasted for the upcoming week, the City of Alexandria and its community partners convened at a meeting on January 14, 2025. The meeting was held at the American Red Cross and facilitated by Angie Branton from the 911 Communications District/Rapides Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. Mayor Jacques Roy and Ms. Branton spearheaded discussions to plan logistics for addressing the expected weather challenges.
Community partners and faith-based organizations collaborated to provide protection against extreme weather conditions, focusing on issues such as housing dislocation, homelessness, and other disruptions to basic needs like warmth, shelter, and sustenance.
The Bolton Avenue Community Center has been designated as a Warming Station located at 315 Bolton Avenue. It will operate from 6 PM on Sunday, January 19, 2025, until Thursday, January 23, 2025. The operation times are subject to change based on updates from the National Weather Service.
The facility is equipped with cots, blankets, and Meals Ready-to-Eat (MREs) to provide a safe haven for those in need during harsh weather conditions. Additional meals will be provided by Louisiana Baptist Convention and Manna House.
It is important to note that the Warming Station cannot accommodate pets or individuals with special medical needs. Visitors must be ambulatory and capable of self-care.
The city is coordinating with other agencies to monitor and prepare additional stations if necessary. The United Way of Central Louisiana will serve as the official point of contact for information distribution among partners through its 211 communications service.
Supporting operations are backed by the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office which provides essential logistical support. Additionally, the City of Pineville is participating in security efforts through collaboration with Police Chief Basco and Mayor Joe Bishop.
