WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Ben Cardin (D-MD) have come together to address the concerning situation in Venezuela. The senators issued a bipartisan statement regarding Venezuelan Dictator Nicolas Maduro’s actions towards the leading opposition leader, María Corina Machado, ahead of presidential elections.
In their statement, the senators expressed deep concern over Maduro's regime's actions, stating, "The Maduro regime has disregarded the Barbados Agreement and shown the world it will stop at nothing to undermine its opponent, María Corina Machado." They highlighted the challenges Machado faces against a regime that represses and censors the people of Venezuela.
The senators emphasized the need for an international response to any attacks on Machado's integrity, including arbitrary arrests. They also raised alarm about the upcoming elections, stating, "Let there be no doubt, the upcoming elections will not be free, fair, nor democratic." The senators called on the Biden Administration and the international community to hold Maduro accountable for his actions.
Furthermore, the senators condemned Venezuela's recent passing of an "anti-fascism" law, which they see as a further attempt to suppress civil society, political opposition, and freedom of the press in the country. They urged the United States to uphold the parameters set out in the Barbados Agreement and consider individual sanctions against those responsible for repressive actions.
As the Venezuelan dictatorship continues its grip on power, the senators stressed the importance of swift action from the United States and the international community to hold the regime accountable for its actions.
The joint statement from Senators Cassidy, Rubio, and Cardin underscores the need for continued attention and action on the situation in Venezuela to protect democracy and human rights in the region.
