WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA) took a stand against the Washington Post Editorial Board's stance on energy and trade policy in a recent Letter to the Editor. Dr. Cassidy criticized the board for their bias and shortsighted analysis, particularly in relation to climate and trade matters.

In his letter, Dr. Cassidy highlighted the importance of bipartisan efforts in environmental policy, stating, "Democrats don’t have a monopoly on environmental policy." He emphasized the significance of the Foreign Pollution Fee Act, a proposal he co-introduced with Sen. Lindsey Graham, which aims to impose a fee on certain imported products based on their emissions intensity compared to domestically produced goods.

Regarding the Editorial Board's approach to heavy polluters like China, Dr. Cassidy questioned, "Why doesn’t the Editorial Board want to hold heavy polluters such as China accountable without letting politics get in the way?"

Dr. Cassidy pointed out the misconceptions in the Board's editorial, particularly concerning the necessity of a domestic carbon tax for compliance with the World Trade Organization. He also highlighted the potential for cooperation in Congress to develop policies that benefit America's economic interests and hold major polluters accountable.

The Foreign Pollution Fee Act, according to Dr. Cassidy, not only aims to reduce global emissions but also stimulate job creation, foster innovation, strengthen global supply-chain security, and promote fair competition for U.S. companies on the international stage, all without implementing a domestic carbon tax.

Dr. Cassidy's efforts in addressing environmental and trade issues extend beyond this recent letter. He has been actively involved in discussions surrounding the geopolitical threats posed by China, emphasizing the need to address the competitive advantage China gains by neglecting environmental standards.

Additionally, Dr. Cassidy has been a proponent of energy and climate policy reforms, releasing a detailed outline to reset U.S. energy policy and leading opposition to initiatives such as a domestic carbon tax. His dedication to promoting sustainable practices and advocating for American economic interests remains a focal point of his political agenda.
