A boil water advisory has been issued for the area surrounding Highway 28 West in Alexandria, Louisiana. The advisory follows repairs to an eight-inch water main located behind Walmart on Highway 28, as confirmed by Barrett Dezendorf, Superintendent of Water Operations.
The repair process led to a loss of water pressure, potentially compromising the water quality in the affected area. As a precautionary measure, the Alexandria Water Department has implemented a boil advisory effective immediately. This advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
The advisory specifically applies to customers in the vicinity of Walmart on Highway 28, as highlighted in an attached map. Consumers are advised to disinfect their water before consumption, including for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, food preparation, and rinsing foods.
To disinfect water, consumers should boil it for one full minute in a clean container. The one-minute duration starts once the water reaches a rolling boil. To improve the taste of boiled water, it can be shaken between two clean containers or a small pinch of salt can be added per quart of boiled water.
After the boil advisory is lifted, businesses and residences in the affected areas should take additional steps to ensure safety:
- Run cold-water faucets for one minute.
- Run drinking water fountains for one minute.
- Flush automatic icemakers by making three batches of ice and discarding them.
- Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle.
- Run water coolers with direct connections for five minutes.
