Repairs to a 6-inch water main on Plantation Drive in Alexandria, Louisiana, have necessitated a boil water advisory, according to Barrett Dezendorf, Superintendent of Water Operations. The loss of water pressure during the repair process has potentially compromised the water quality in the affected area.
As a precautionary measure, the Alexandria Water Department has issued an immediate boil advisory. This advisory will remain in effect until further notice. The specific area under advisory includes all properties along Plantation Drive as highlighted in the attached map.
Consumers in the affected area are advised to disinfect their water before consumption or use for any purposes such as making ice, brushing teeth, food preparation, or rinsing foods. The recommended method is to boil water for one full minute in a clean container after it reaches a rolling boil. To improve taste after boiling, consumers can shake the water by pouring it between two clean containers or add a small pinch of salt per quart of boiled water.
The Alexandria Water Department instructs that consumers should continue these precautions until they are notified that the boil advisory has been lifted. Once lifted, businesses and residences should take additional steps including running cold-water faucets and drinking fountains for one minute, flushing automatic icemakers by discarding three batches of ice, running water softeners through a regeneration cycle, and running direct connection water coolers for five minutes.
