U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and Jon Ossoff have introduced the Forest Data Modernization Act, a bill aimed at enhancing the U.S. Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis program. The legislation seeks to modernize data collection methods by integrating advanced remote sensing technology and updating strategic plans for data expansion. This initiative is expected to open new economic opportunities for foresters while contributing to environmental protection.

"Louisiana benefits when we use all our natural resources, including timber," said Dr. Cassidy. "New data is a fantastic opportunity to better manage and support our forests."

Senator Ossoff emphasized Georgia's leading role in forestry, stating, "I've worked closely with Georgia foresters to write this bipartisan bill that will support the efficient management of Georgia’s forests."

In the House of Representatives, companion legislation is being introduced by Representatives Barry Moore and Kim Schrier. Representative Moore highlighted the need for updated technology and accessible data for foresters in a growing market. Representative Schrier pointed out the importance of reliable forest health information in mitigating wildfire risks.

The National Alliance of Forest Owners, Georgia Forestry Association (GFA), Jamestown, and other organizations back the act. Dave Tenny from NAFO described it as "a crucial step towards enhancing the U.S. Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program." Tim Lowrimore from GFA commended the senators' leadership, noting that Georgia's working forests are vital to its economy.

Troy Harris from Jamestown expressed support for the act's potential impact on private working forests and sustainable building practices. Andres Villegas from Rayonier acknowledged that reliable data is central to responsible forest management.

The proposed legislation aims to strengthen forest stewardship, promote market innovation, create rural jobs, and provide environmental benefits through improved data infrastructure.
