U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, John Barrasso, and John Thune, along with 12 other Republican colleagues, have introduced the Eliminating Lavish Incentives to Electric (ELITE) Vehicles Act. This bill aims to end federal tax credits for electric vehicles and charging stations, a move intended to prevent taxpayer money from subsidizing luxury electric vehicles for high-income individuals and corporations.
Senator Cassidy criticized the current policy, stating: "The Biden administration giving tax credits at the environmental lobby’s bidding is not good policy. American taxpayers should not have to foot the bill so millionaires can zip around in their electric cars."
Senator Barrasso added his concerns about foreign influence on U.S. markets: "The hard-earned money of taxpaying Americans should not cover the cost for the luxuries of the nation’s elite. Nor should we be allowing China to infiltrate our markets and undermine our supply chain." He emphasized that repealing these tax credits would stop Washington from providing benefits to adversaries and wealthy individuals.
Senator Thune expressed similar sentiments regarding taxpayer burdens: "American taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for the Biden administration’s sweeping windfall for electric vehicles. I’m proud to join Sen. Barrasso in this effort to end the exorbitant tax burden that was placed on American households."
In addition to Senators Cassidy, Barrasso, and Thune, those supporting this legislation include Senators James Lankford, Cynthia Lummis, Kevin Cramer, Tom Cotton, Shelley Moore Capito, Tim Sheehy, Pete Ricketts, Joni Ernst, Roger Marshall, Thom Tillis, John Hoeven, and Rick Scott.
The ELITE Vehicles Act has received backing from organizations such as the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, Americans for Prosperity, National Taxpayers Union, and Heritage Action.
