U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy and John Kennedy have introduced a bill to extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through December 31, 2026. This extension aims to provide stability for Louisiana families who depend on the program. Typically, Congress passes short-term extensions for NFIP; however, this new proposal seeks a longer-term solution.
Dr. Cassidy stated, “The purpose of an insurance program is to provide certainty. Renewing every two months is not that.” He emphasized the need for consistency in helping homeowners and communities.
Senator Kennedy remarked on the importance of NFIP despite its imperfections: “The National Flood Insurance Program isn’t perfect—but more than 400,000 Louisianians depend on it. I’m proud to help introduce this bill to give our state and millions of Americans reassurance that the program they depend on will stay in place while Congress works to improve it.”
In recent years, Congress has passed numerous short-term extensions, which some argue undermine the program's effectiveness for its 4.7 million policyholders nationwide. The upcoming Senate vote marks the 33rd short-term extension attempt.
Support for Cassidy’s flood insurance extension comes from Greater New Orleans (GNO), Inc., and the National Association of Counties. GNO President Michael Hecht stated that a two-year reauthorization would allow necessary discussions around comprehensive reform and flood risk mitigation strategies.
Matthew Chase from the National Association of Counties added, “Extending the National Flood Insurance Program would ensure continuous operations and greater stability for policyholders until a long-term reauthorization is enacted into law – a valuable source of certainty for counties and our residents.”
Previously, Senator Cassidy introduced legislation aimed at easing rising flood insurance premiums with a tax credit initiative targeting low- and middle-income households enrolled in NFIP.
Over time, Cassidy has been vocal about NFIP reforms through speeches and reports addressing issues like premium hikes affecting homeowners across the country.
